CHAPTER SIX

ANOTHER pain was trying to rip her in half and Laurel had to stop pressing the horn. Anyway, she couldn’t concentrate on anything other than what her body was telling her to do, everything inside her focused on bringing new life into the world.

The urge to bear down was so overwhelming that she barely registered the moment when the door above her was wrenched open, showering her with snow.

Her eyes tight shut with the effort of pushing, she was only peripherally aware of voices, male and female, and of hands reaching to support and comfort while the pain lasted.

Light played over her tightly closed lids so she knew her rescuers could see the full extent of her predicament. Suddenly, for all the intensity and immediacy of her advanced stage of labour, she had the sensation of security and protection. She knew that she could concentrate on giving birth because others had taken over caring for her.

The contraction was beginning to fade when she felt someone climb into the car with her, someone lithe enough to slide past her into the back of the car without difficulty.

A female voice quickly relayed the information that she was trapped as much by the ungainly shape of her body as by her seat belt.

Then arms were reaching through the door opening and strong hands were gripping her under her arms. Another pair was waiting to take the weight of her legs when her mystery companion located the seat belt. By the time the contraction finally died she’d been released and was ready to be hoisted up onto the side of the car.

‘It’s all right, Laurel, we’ve got you,’ said a soothing voice, and she looked up into the face of a complete stranger.

‘Thank you,’ she panted, then closed her eyes briefly while she caught her breath. It was funny that now she knew there were people willing to help her nothing seemed so bad, not the cold and snow or the prospect of delivering a child in the middle of a field.

Then a warning bell sounded in her head.

‘Who are you, and how do you know my name?’ After all she’d gone through, had she fallen into Robert Wainwright’s scheming hands again?

‘He’s Marc Fletcher and he’s a doctor,’ said the female voice, as slender hands passed out the last of her scant belongings and prepared to climb up out of the stricken vehicle. ‘He’s also my husband.’

‘But…’ That explained half of her question but still left a big hole in the other half—or had she missed something? The next contraction was building but she didn’t think her brain had completely shut down. ‘How could he possibly know who I am?’

‘Because we were looking for you,’ the woman said as she dropped to the ground and turned to face her. She angled the torch she’d been using in the car so that it illuminated her own face—an eerily familiar face. ‘Hello, Laurel. I’m Lauren,’ she said with a suspicious hitch in her voice.

Laurel didn’t know what to do first.
